NRA Home Firearms Safety Course
I. Safe Gun
Handling
This covers the 3 fundamental rules of gun safety, 7 additional rules of gun safety, and examples of
special rules for special circumstances.
- Always keep the gun pointed in a
safe direction
- Always keep your finger off the
trigger until ready to shoot.
- Always keep the gun unloaded until
ready to use.
II. Identifying and Unloading Different Types of
Firearms
This will
familiarize students with identification and basic function of the major types of firearm actions, such as
single and double-action revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, rifles, and shotguns, bolt action rifles, hinged
actions, falling-block actions, etc.
III. Practical Exercise in Safe Gun
Handling
This provides one
on one instruction and hands-on training with dummy ammunition (there is absolutely no live ammunition or
actual shooting in this classroom. There are other courses with live fire exercises and drills. This
is a great course for those who are new to the shooting sports.
IV. Types of Ammunition, Cleaning and Storage
of Firearms
This covers the
difference in many types of ammunition, safe storage of firearms, and some great cleaning tips and techniques that
will benefit even experienced shooters.
I highly recommend this course to anyone
interested in firearms safety. Although there is no actual shooting in this course, it offers extensive hands-on
training with safe operation of a variety of firearms and instills enough information that even long-time gun
owners will learn something and have fun.
